Where will your baby Sleep?

For the first few months, your baby will spend most of every day sleeping. The typical newborn sleeps about 18 hours a day. You have several options for your newborn’s sleeping arrangements: Bassinet, Cribs, and/or Cradle.  Even the youngest infants have individual needs. However, your baby will be sleeping most of the time and whenever they want. Unfortunately, babies are not on your schedule, they have their own. Your baby may be sleeping all day and be up all night, which is very typical.  You should be thinking about your baby’s sleeping arrangements before your baby arrives.  It can be a challenge to find a quiet place for your baby to sleep during the day.

Decorating the nursery is a favorite project for new parents and caregivers. Beddings should always be used as instructed by the manufacturer to help ensure your baby’s safety.

  • An Infant should ALWAYS sleep in a crib, which meets current federal and ASTM standards.
  • Choose a firm mattress that fits snugly in the crib.
  • ALWAYS use a crib sheet that fits securely on the mattress and wraps around the mattress corners.
  • Select bumper pads that fit around the entire crib and tie or snap securely into place.
  • Use bumper pads only until the child can pull up to a standing position. Then remove them so baby cannot use the pads to climb out of the crib.
  • Mobiles should also be removed when baby can pull himself or herself up.
  • NEVER place infants to sleep on pillows, sofa cushions, adult beds, waterbeds, beanbags, or any other surface not specifically designed for infant sleep.

    For Babies Under 12 Months…
  • Normal, healthy infants should ALWAYS sleep on their backs unless otherwise advised by a pediatrician.
  • Only a fitted sheet, mattress pad, and/or waterproof pad should be used under baby.
  • Remove pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, pillow-like stuffed toys, and other pillow-like products from the crib.
  • Cover baby with a thin covering, such as a crib blanket, receiving blanket or other blankets specifically designed for infants, only reaching as far as baby's chest, and tuck the covering around the crib mattress. For newborns, consider swaddling.
  • Do not overdress your baby. Consider using a sleeper or other sleep clothing as an alternative to any covering.

Decisions, decisions, that comes of course after, questions and more questions. What do I need? What don't I need? What do I like and need? What do I like, but really don't need? Someone told me that this (whatever) is dangerous, and this (whatever) is not? Who do I listen to? Who really knows some answers and what are their answers based on?

Did I hit home? Do some of these questions ring true to you right now? Are you so confused and just do not know whom and what to believe?

That is why I am here to try and help. I do not have all the answers, nor do I pretend to have all the answers. However, I do have some of them, and let me tell you why.

I have been in the infant's bedding market as a designer and manufacturer for 29 years. That is a pretty long time to have grown and survived in a market filled with dozens and dozens of companies, new and innovative ideas daily, safety concerns on the part of our industry and that of the government, and constant new rumors. I have been extremely active in the infant's safety committee together with the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), and that of ASTM (ASTM International is a not-for-profit organization that provides a global forum for the development and publication of voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems, and services)…together for almost the last decade we have worked, discussed and researched many issues that concern you and your precious little ones regarding safety trends, products and use of products.

My passion has been in the infant's bedding area for obvious reasons. I manufacture bedding and I want to make sure that I make the best and the safest, and of course, the most beautiful bedding on the market today and every day. My passion for safety is well known. I really believe in the need to educate the new moms of today, to promote the right product for the right reason and to dispel erroneous advice. I feel that I am pretty well qualified based on my experience and dedication to the industry.

O.K. so now, what's the point? I have been hearing now for several months that information from consumer organizations and agencies that deal with pregnant moms, even hospitals that have classes for pregnant moms are advocating and dispensing advice on nursery decorating. One of the primary pieces of advice is their position on bumpers for the crib. It now seems to be trendy and politically correct to advise moms-to-be not to put bumpers in the crib. This is a major mistake, and information like this coming from these agencies that have yet to appear at one safety meeting without any documentation is extremely dangerous.

Bumpers are a must. Absolutely. However, there are important pieces of information as to what type of bumpers, their length of use, and materials that must be made aware to young parents-to-be. Without a bumper in the crib, the young infant is being exposed to danger of their soft spot, and getting their little legs and arms caught in between the slats.

That said, the advisory is as follows:

a) bumpers must be made to fit properly and securely in the crib which means, no overlapping of sections, and no wide gaps between the ends at the corner sections.

b) Bumper tie lengths must be from 7"- 9". This is the rule. This is the standard which at present is voluntary, but this is the standard that has been accepted by JPMA, ASTM and the CPSC. Bumper ties that exceed the 9" are a potential strangulation risk. Why? If all the bumper ties are not secured properly in a bow or in a knot, those ties can become the danger. Manufacturers that exceed the 9" rule (and there are several), are violating the voluntary standard that we have accepted for several years. Longer than 9" might look great, but it is not appropriate and approved for your infant.

c) Chenille - at present, is not against the standard. However, this could possibly change. I will tell you why. Chenille is beautiful, toasty and warm. However, the chenille fabric itself is made of yarns that pull out. That's what makes chenille chenille. Just imagine that you are in a crib for hours at a time and you are not always sleeping in this environment. You are growing by the minute, and you are exploring and learning. Your little hands are the guides. You feel the texture and it feels good. You play with the yarns, and, as nature will teach you, you pull on the yarns. So then what do you do? Do you call for help and report a defect in the product? I don't think so. What you will do, because you are a developing curious little one, you will put those threads in your mouth. How many will you put in? As many as you can! Will you choke, maybe and maybe not. You might cough, and you will definitely swallow them after you have moistened them plenty with saliva. You might even find that you are having so much fun pulling and eating them, that the threads are coming out so often you might even start inhaling them when you rub your adorable little face into this sweet and cozy material. Because your room is kept at a nice comfortable temperature, just think of all the allergy spores and dust mites that are growing on this toasty warm bumper as well.

Hopefully, from reading this paragraph on chenille, you will understand why the fabric is controversial and not recommended for use in the crib. In fact, chenille is not an appropriate choice anywhere in the crib that baby can reach and pull its threads out.

d) According to the JPMA, CPSC, and the SIDS Foundation (First Candle), bumpers that are pillow-like are not recommended as well. I'm sure that you all know that pillows are not to be put into a crib. Why? The CPSC and SIDS Foundation (First Candle) advise against the use of pillows or pillow- like bumpers as a preventive to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). So, the bumpers that are pillow-like could be a potential danger. Bumpers must be firm. To understand all the issues of SIDS, I suggest you contact the SIDS Foundation (First Candle). The information is very important in protecting your baby.

e) Bumpers must have a minimum of 6 ties to secure the bumper to the crib. However, in order for the bumper to really be secure, which is extremely important in preventing the little infant from becoming entangled in the bumper itself, I suggest bumper ties top and bottom on all four corners and additional ties on each of the drop sides both top and bottom.

These recommendations are the basics. These are simple suggestions to remember, and feel confident about as you begin the selection process of nursery decorating. You will have a wonderful time in selecting a variety of styles, colors, and fabrications during this very special time. Remembering the safety suggestions (and rules) should give you comfort and confidence in your selections
